Review Your Non-Compete Agreement When You Quit and Get a New Job

I recently offered some advice to those trying to leave their job while having a non-compete agreement.

 

A few of the tips I shared include:

 

1. Do read your employment contract carefully

It may sound obvious, but be sure you have closely read your employment contract. It’s important to fully understand the scope of the clause and all the terms outlined. Some individuals choose to bring in an attorney at this point to help them thoroughly review the contract.

 

2. Do not take any files

The main goal of employers that use non-compete clauses is to keep their business secrets safe and contained. While forwarding yourself even the simplest of old e-mails and proposals may seem harmless, having any evidence of your former employers property can be extremely detrimental to your case. Computers, cell phones, and most forms of business technology make tracing a paper trail relatively easy for employers, so make sure to keep yours clean.
