Paternity Leave and Workplace Flexibility

Friday 13 Jun 2014

I recently came across an interesting article in Fortune about the issue of paternity leave for new dads. Being a father myself and with Father’s Day this weekend, I thought it was timely.

Just earlier this week, the Obama administration convened the first-ever White House event focused on working dads and the impact of corporate policies like paternity leave and workplace flexibility. Unlike the traditional roles of a father, nowadays fathers are more involved in their kids’ lives, having to find a balance between work life and family life. In fact, the United States is one of the few countries that does not offer paternity leave, with only 12% of U.S. employers that actually do.

Those men who have taken paternity leave have faced mixed reactions from employers, but argue that it was worth being able to spend the time to bond with their newborn baby. It is just as important for a father to be able to develop a special bond with his child as for the mother, so it’s something that employers should take into consideration.
