New Year, New Laws in Florida
Friday 16 Jan 2015
For those who aren’t aware, it’s good to note that with the new year, several new laws were enacted in Florida, so here is a brief rundown for what’s new in 2015:
- Florida residents and businesses will experience changes with the start of the new year as the state’s minimum wage has increased from $7.93 to $8.05 an hour, due to a 2004 constitutional amendment that leads to annual adjustments.
- Employers will see an overall 5.2 percent decrease in workers-compensation insurance rates.
- The law drawing the most attention requires children through age five to be placed in car seats or booster seats while riding in vehicles. Currently, children ages three and younger are required to ride in the child-restraint devices, while children ages four and five can use seat belts.
- An additional new law involves a $1 surcharge on the use of car-sharing services, instead of the state’s $2-a-day rental-car surcharge. The $1 surcharge will apply when a member of a car-sharing service uses a vehicle for less than 24 hours.
