I read an interesting article about the recent overtime rules from the Obama Administration in the Miami Herald.

The memorandum sent by the President to the Secretary of Labor is ambiguous because it states only that “regulations regarding exemptions from the [FLSA’s] overtime requirement, particularly for executive, administrative, and professional employees have not kept up with our modern economy.”  The President requests the Secretary of Labor to “propose revisions to modernize and streamline the existing overtime regulations.”  Presently the administrative, executive and professional exemptions require that the employee earn $455 per week or $23,660 before the exemption applies.  The President proposes to increase this amount, which will have the potential of substantially increasing the number of workers covered by the FLSA.

While the rule has yet to become law, I would be interested to see if it passes. Then, we will be able to see the tangible effects it has on businesses and employees in Florida.
